  • MCOBA will be partnering with Big School English Programme (wholly owned by The Big Education Group Sdn Bhd) (“BEG”) in establishing The English Enrichment Community Centres (EECC) at various venues, with the noble objective of enriching and enhancing the learning of the English Language, among children of the urban poor. Other individuals are welcome to explore their own CSR initiative or join hands with MCOBA to advance this noble cause.
  • BEG will be hiring unemployed local graduates as tutors, who will be trained by BEG trainers, to ensure the quality of the English Language especially phonetics, enunciation and pronunciation, is not compromised. It is expected that  the tutors themselves will be able to enrich their own English speaking proficiency and be able to express themselves with maturity and fluency, when attending their job interviews.
  • This is seen as a win- win situation for both the tutors and the students involved in the English Enrichment Community Centre. Lastly, MCOBA hopes that this initiative in reaching out to the underprivileged children will be followed by other organisations from the corporate and government sector to benefit our future generations.

The Star’s Report on the 1st Yayasan Selangor-SMSS Sevens

HOSTS SM Sains Selangor (SMSS) stepped up the pace to lift the boys’ Under-15 Cup at the inaugural Yayasan Selangor-SMSS Sevens at the school field in Bandar Tun Razak, Cheras recently.

They surged forward and went on a scoring spree by chalking four converted tries against the Klang Valley-based Bintang Rugby Club (BRC) in the first half of the recent championship encounter.

SMSS coach Raja Idris Raja Ali praised two key players for their major contributions in leading their side to victory, with a 42-17 win over BRC.

In the first seven minutes, Ahmad Azim Ahmad Nazrin and Ungku Lukman Ungku Azmi, the speedy duo, led SMSS to the interval with a comfortable 28-7 advantage.

Azim delivered a memorable hat-trick and Ungku Lukman added another while BRC replied with a converted try through Rhys Mackley in the first half.

Raja Idris said the youngsters performed beyond expectations and coped well in tackling the explosive seven-a-side format at the recent two-day meet.

“We expected the boys in the Under-15 group to perform because they can adapt to the fast-moving form of rugby.

“Going into the final, we anticipated an open affair against BRC.

“However, we rose to the occasion and went into the half-time break with a big margin lead.

“We emerged victorious with an outstanding performance in the first half,” he added.

Mohd Ubaidillah Amran and Ahmad Airil Rashid also contributed a converted try each for SMSS in the second half.

Rhys scored the other 10 points for BRC.

SMSS fielded three teams for the Under-15 and their second-ranked line-up also came in as runners-up in the Plate section, behind Johor’s English College after both teams drew 10-10.

English College was declared the winners for scoring the first try.

Meanwhile, BRC suffered another disappointment in completing their campaign in the boys’ Under-17 Cup final.

Despite taking a slim two-point (7-5) lead in the first half, BRC committed several costly mistakes and allowed Perak’s Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (Star) to edge them 15-12.

Earlier, BRC showed their domination by chalking up a one-two finish in the boys’ Under-12 Cup final.

Rugby as a nation building tool

The remarks “Battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton” was not attributed to rugby as rugby was not yet formally played at the time of the battle*. It was cricket. in any event, the Duke of Wellington was referring to “the stuff that won Waterloo”, i.e., manliness grown in games and sport.

Team sports, and in effect, certain sports such as rugby,  are very important to build strong young men and women of character and strong in the face of adversity.  THBT that Malaysia requires such sport to be played and enjoyed by its communities in support of building stronger men and women and team players who will be successful despite adversity..

A recent article, in conjunction with the Anzac remembrance day in Australia, was demonstrative of what rugby stood for. At^, the writer Spiro Zavos wrote of the price Australian rugby paid in the 1st World War:

It has been estimated that 5,000 Australian rugby players went on active war service between 1914 and 1918. This total represented about 98 percent of the playing numbers in the game at the time, outside of the schools.

He explained the historical fascination with rugby:

The rugby game was also picked up by the British armed services as a splendid exercise in the manly virtues that would be useful in wars.

And not only by the armed services. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics and the man responsible for rugby being an Olympic sport up to the 1920s, saw rugby as a game that could toughen up French youth in the 1890s for the inevitable battle to the death with a rampant, expanding Germany.

Rugby is a war game, it is not war itself. But it was the war game aspect of it that attracted the attention of school teachers and Empire loyalists in the colonies.

He also set out the characters of rugby

The game tested courage, resilience and attitude, all qualities useful qualities for soldiers to have in battle. It was a combative sport requiring discipline, fitness, quick thinking and a strategic element that could easily translate into battle field tactics.

It is time to visit your olskul! Soon!

Away from the pressure cooker of competitive games, children always welcome games against adults where, they are in, with a chance, to win it, or to have a go. And if you were in schools, priority may have been to enable the older kids the opportunities to play. The younger ones will just have to wait their turn (Sigh).
As many Boarders will soon re-visit their alma mater, during each “Alumni Day”, old girls or old boys or such, the Boarders should take this opportunity READ ON.
